I have a bone to pick

Isn’t it lovely? I’ve been saving this piece of silk for a long time so that I can frame it. The dye work is outstanding, even if I dare say so myself. The opportunity came along to exhibit it in a great venue, then after the very tedious process of stretching this very delicate piece over a canvas and float framing it, I’m told that it’s too large. I’m a bit ticked off as there were no limitations expressed other than “it shouldn’t be as large as a bed quilt”.  Oh, well. Some other time, some other place.

Sacrum Bleu, shibori on silk by Darlene Nadeau
“Sacrum Bleu”, shibori on silk

Really, it’s only 30″x40″ — which is quite small considering my work comes out at a minimum of 9 feet long at a time. If you’re going to show something, it should be somewhat representational of your body of work — something 2 feet square isn’t going to cut it.  The dye patterning has beautiful bones — pelvic bones, in fact — hence the name “sacrum” and obviously blue, or bleu for the play on word of the mildly sacrilegious French expression sacré bleu!

Hanging on my own wall for now. I’ve been sick for a couple of days and I’m feeling crabby.

It’s gorgeous! Too bad “someone” thinks it’s too large. Rules! Hrmph!
I took my new veil to class tonight (I was substituting for my friend Lisa) and it got lots of “oohs!” Of course!
I hope you feel better soon.

This is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! I’m a belly dancer/graduate student in West Lafayette, IN. I’ve gotten curious about shibori after reading a DIY feature article in a recent “Threads” magazine… And I’ve been toying with the idea of trying to dye my own veils to dance with. While procrastinating on dissertation writing, I ran across a link to your site from a Bhuz.com silk dyeing thread… I’m glad I did! Your work is beautiful!

Your work should be framed on the wall. :)

thank you so much, Sarah. yes, I am working mostly offline on more “wall-friendly” formats. someday it will come out of the closet!

Hi Darlene! If this is what they consider “larger than a bed quilt” then I’d hate to see the size of their beds!

The designs are gorgeous – lots of depth and almost looks like stained glass. It’ll find its rightful home eventually….

Another belly dancer/fledging silk dyer here… This piece is so gorgeous I had to comment! I love the pattern and the colors so much.
